Last night’s Bacon Tasting exceeded by expectations. Where else would you be able to have ten pieces of bacon and not get reprimanded by your wife/husband, after all it’s a wine tasting. Gary Hirsch was here describing the different types of bacon and I explained why I picked certain wines to pair with them. The response was tremendous. 2012 Zingara Pinot Grigio- Delle Venezie, Italy
Pinot Grigio – is thought to be a mutation of Pinot Noir. “Pinot” comes from the French word for “pine cone” and is given to this grape because it grows in small clusters that resemble the shape of a pine cone. While “Grigio” is derived from the French word “Gris”, meaning “gray” because the grape traditionally has a gray or blue color. Fresh aromas of white flowers and citrus fruits expand onto the palate and are balanced by vibrant acidity and a crisp, clean finish.

2012 Terre di Talamo Piano….Piano Rosato- Toscana (Tuscany), Italy
50% Sangiovese, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon- Piano….Piano exhibits a rosé-bright red hue, then opens up to an almost-explosive wealth of aromas on the nose. Soft and silky on the palate, mineral freshness, purity, with a notable firm structure. A perfect balance in concentration, intensity and refinement. The finish is leisurely and especially full-flavored.

Produced by Joseph Wagner, scion of Caymus Vineyards fame, and blended from a collection of All-Star coastal vineyards in Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Barbara. Blue fruits and black cherries with a ripe, sunshine-kissed finish will satisfy your Pinot fix for a song.

2012 Tres Picos Garnacha- Campo de Borsao, Spain`
The terrific 2012 Tres Picos is one of the finest Grenache-based wines made in the world. This full-bodied beauty boasts a deep ruby/purple color. Heady aromas of blueberry, cherry and white pepper, plus exotic cinnamon notes and hints of lavender. Fresh and seamless, offering vibrant blueberry and black raspberry flavors and suave floral notes. The spicy quality lingers seductively on the tenacious finish.

2008 Zingara Chianti Riserva- Chianti, Italy
85% Sangiovese and 15% Ciliegiolo and Caniolo grapes
The nose is multi-faceted, showing cleanly-delineated aromas of cherry, raspberry, and plum, with hints of black pepper, and espresso beans. A clean, vibrant acidity and silky, well-integrated tannins contribute to an impressive mouthfeel. The palate is full, harmonious and velvety with dark fruits, notes of tobacco and balanced finish.

2011 McManis Petite Sirah- California
The Petite Sirah is almost black in color. While very dark in color the hue is vibrant and youthful. The nose has an abundance of ripe black fruits, predominantly blackberry and boysenberry. Oak aging has contributed a pleasing mélange of rich creamy caramel and maple syrup scents, with just a barely perceptible aroma of smoke. The wine delivers all of the flavors one would expect from the aromatics. Savory and luscious the finish pleasantly persistent.
